Statistics Finland participates in the development of statistics in Georgia in an EU cooperation project

Statistics Finland leads a two-year Twinning project, which aims to develop the statistical system in Georgia and help the country adapt to the EU's statistical requirements.

The project aims to help the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) develop the reliability of statistical classifications and population statistics and strengthen the country's ability to produce and use official statistics.

“That fact that we will in future receive internationally comparable statistics from Georgia can be seen as one of the merits of the project. The project will also improve the use of information and data in public decision-making in Georgia. From Statistics Finland's perspective, the project develops the competence of our experts and provides useful experience concerning international cooperation,” says Head of Department Katri Kaaja from Statistics Finland.

The Twinning project is part of the development plan for official statistics in Georgia. Through the project, Georgia aims to expand its international cooperation in the field of statistics and come closer to the EU's statistical standards. A roadmap for developing the population register in Georgia will also be drawn up during the project.

Georgia’s statistical system did well in the World Bank’s latest comparison. Georgia ranked 16th on the list. Finland's statistical system was at the top of the comparison. Countries were compared using more than fifty indicators measuring the performance of statistical systems. The data used in the comparison were collected from each country concerning the year 2022.

The Twinning project in Georgia is headed by Statistics Finland. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) and the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) also participate as official partners.

The Twinning project is part of a cooperation programme funded by the EU that supports exchange of information and competence sharing between the Member States and candidate countries or other beneficiary countries.
