Business ID

The business and organisation code or the Business ID is a code assigned by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office or the Tax Administration to an enterprise and corporation. The code comprises of seven digits, a hyphen and a control number, i.e. it is in the form 1234567-8.

The Business ID identifies the enterprise. However, it is not possible to conclude from the Business ID whether the enterprise has actually been registered in the Tax Administration’s registers and the Trade Register, but the information must always be checked separately from the Business Information System’s enterprise search, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office or the Tax Administration.

Name of the enterprise

In the Business Register, official names are used for legal units and trade names for natural persons. The official name of a legal unit includes an identifier of the company form, such as Limited Company/Ltd or Limited Partnership. Names for enterprises are obtained to the Business Register from the Tax Administration and they are congruent with the names of the enterprises in the Business Information System.

Postal address

The postal address is the address to which an enterprise or a quasi-corporate unit wishes to have its postal items delivered. A postal address is comprised of a street address (name and number of street/road) or a post office box number and a postal code and name of post office.

Municipality of domicile

The municipality of domicile of the enterprise is the domicile defined by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and the Tax Administration. For legal persons, the domicile is the municipality specified in the memoranda of association and entered in the Trade, Foundation or Association Register, which must be located in Finland. For natural persons, the domicile of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office is the place of business and the municipality of residence according to the Tax Administration’s Population Information System.

Region

Telephone and fax number

The number contains an area dialling code and the subscriber's telephone number. The area dialling code has no more than four digits and the telephone number has at least four digits.

Industry

The industry of the enterprise is defined in accordance with Statistics Finland's Standard Industrial Classification 2008 (TOL 2008). An industry is defined independently for all enterprises and establishments proper at the most detailed level of the industrial classification. The industry of an ancillary establishment is generally the same as the enterprise's main industry.

The main industry of a multi-establishment enterprise is defined according to the value added generated at its establishments engaged in different economic activities. The value added corresponds closely to increase in value. The value added for the industries of an enterprise is obtained by multiplying the number of employees in each establishment by the average value added it creates in its industry and by proportioning the obtained figure to the duration of its activity in the accounting period within the statistical year. The main industry of the enterprise is the industry with the largest value added in the accounting period. The definition of the main industry proceeds in stages from the alphabetical code to the most detailed level of the industrial classification.

Purity percentage of the enterprise’s industry

The purity percentage of the enterprise’s industry describes how many per cent of the turnover of a multi-establishment enterprise is accumulated from the industry recorded as the main industry.

Number of personnel

The personnel includes the work input of both wage and salary earners and self-employed persons measured in staff-years. For example, the work input of a person who has worked full-time throughout the year corresponds to one staff-year. Correspondingly, a person who has worked half-day for a year corresponds to half a staff-year. For enterprises not included in the inquiries, the personnel has been estimated based on data on wages and salaries and background information on enterprises and wage and salary earners.
