Statistical Yearbook of Finland 2022 – the classic draws an overall picture of Finland

A comprehensive volume of statistics on Finland and Finnish society has just been published. The long time series of the Statistical Yearbook of Finland give an overall picture of the development of our society right up to today.

The Yearbook contains the latest statistical time series, regional statistics and comparison data from other countries. In addition to Statistics Finland’s statistics, the Yearbook also includes statistics by other producers of the Official Statistics of Finland. The trilingual (Finnish, Swedish, English) Yearbook contains altogether 450 tables, statistical graphs or thematic maps.

Infographics. In 2021: Industrial structure, share of the employed: Services and administration 74 percent, industry and construction 21 percent, agriculture and forestry 4 percent. In 2021: Of total electricity consumption 9.3 percent was wind power and 0.3 percent solar power.

Finland’s population is ageing

  • At the end of 2021, the population of Finland was 5,548,241. Twenty-three per cent of the population were aged 65 or older.
  • The number of live-born children was 49,594, of whom 25,287 were boys and 24,307 girls. The life expectancy of newborn girls was 84.5 years and that of boys 79.2 years.
  • In all, 36,364 persons moved to Finland and 13,459 persons emigrated from the country.
  • Altogether 149,879 Finns had dual citizenship. Of them, six per cent were aged 65 or over.
  • A total of 19,579 marriages were entered into in Finland. In all, 12,166 marriages ended in divorce.
  • Old-age pension was started by 44,018 persons and disability pension by 17,480 persons.

Finns live in towns

  • Of the population, 71 per cent were living in the area of the 50 biggest municipalities in 2021.
  • At the end of the year, 1,282,488 persons were living alone, 46 per cent of household-dwelling units.
  • The total number of persons living in overcrowded conditions was 858,131.
  • The total number of dwellings was 3.2 million, 55 per cent of which were owner-occupied dwellings and 33 per cent rental dwellings.
  • Forty-seven per cent of household-dwelling units lived in blocks of flats.
  • The average housing loans of household-dwelling units with housing loans amounted to EUR 110,553.

We are cultural people enjoying nature

  • A total of 4.4 million visits were made to museums in 2021. Museums had 824 exhibitions.
  • There were 728 libraries and 128 mobile libraries in Mainland Finland.
  • There were 139 premieres in cinemas, 28 of which had been produced in Finland.
  • There are 13,882 protected areas in Finland, of which 41 are national parks and 19 strict nature reserves.
