Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased slightly in the last quarter of 2021

A total of 66 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the fourth quarter of 2021, which was 4 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by 2 per cent and the volume of transport of other goods decreased by 4 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the fourth quarter of 2019, the total transport volume of lorries amounted to 7,6 billion tonne-kilometres, which was 3 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Ninety-four per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and 6 per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
